Centre trains 40 best female science students in mathematics

The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) says 40 best female science students selected from senior secondary schools across the federation are presently participating in UNESCO-sponsored programme on enhanced learning of mathematical sciences.

Prof. Stephen Onah, the Director/Chief Executive Officer, NMC made this known in an interview on Wednesday in Abuja.

He explained that the programme was geared toward encouraging more female students to study mathematics in the university.

According to Onah, there is a wide gap between boys and girls in the learning of mathematics, computer science, statistics and physics among other science subjects.

He noted that the training would enhance their interest in the learning of sciences, especially mathematics.

The director/chief executive officer said that the 40 participants were selected from among SS1 and SS2 students.

“We ensured that the 36 states including FCT were represented. Also, after the exercise we will encourage the participants to join the national Olympiads competitions for further training.

“ This will encourage and strengthen their interest in the study of science education,’’ he said.
Onah said that the training, which began on Nov. 22, would end on Thursday.

NMC has the mandate to train and develop high-level personnel in mathematical sciences, including statistics, computer science and theoretical physics among others.
