Good morning! Welcome to TNG’s daily updates on Covid-19 where we keep you abreast of happenings on the pandemic around the globe. Emman Ovuakporie, Regional Editor, TNG.
Apparently not prepared for a two week lockdown, Nigerians have made a special appeal to President Muhamnadu Buhari to use his Executive Power to help bring down the soaring prices of food items.
Immediately after Buhari’s statewide telecast on the ravaging virus on Sunday evening, the cost of food items, transportation, even drugs in pharmaceutical outlets soared.
Bikers capitalised on this development and increased their prices by 150percent.
Cost of bike transportation within Abuja satellite towns that usually cost N50 now cost between N200-N300.
Food items too are fast getting beyond the reach of so many Nigerians as they lack the purchasing power to afford such items.
Some Nigerians who spoke TNG were conclusive in their verdict that Buhari must use his powers to remedy the situation before it escalates.
Commercial vehicle operators increased transport fares by a 100percent.
Mr David Ojimah, an IT graduate told TNG that’ Buhari must prove to us that he is truly in charge by bringing down the prices of food items.
‘ I had to trek from Federal Housing in Kubwa because I can’t afford to pay N250 for okada I can’t oh never.
Another Abuja resident, Seyi Biobaku narrated his ordeal too to TNG saying:
‘Kai water don pass garri, we now buy one muddle of garri that we use to buy for N200 is now N350.
“Buhari must do something fast or this sit at home no go work for here oh Corona or no Corona man must wack.
Covid -19 Regulations 2020 further empowers Buhari
President Muhamnadu Buhari now has legal teeth to bite if the need arises as he signed the Covid-19 Regulations 2020.
Most of the decisions taken on border closures and lockdown in some states of the federation now have a legal backing.
Another PDP governor tests positive
The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde on Monday tested positive to the coronavirus virus.
He is the second PDP governor to test positive, the first was Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed.
Covid-19 recognises no uniform or colour
The army too has joined the frenzy of ensuring that they are equally protected from the virus.
There are clear indications that the Nigerian Army is not resting on its oars, as it is intensifying preventive measures against the spread of the dreaded COVID 19 across the barracks in Nigeria.
The Headquarters of Nigerian Army Medical Corps Victoria Island Lagos in compliance with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Tukur Yusufu Buratai has since taken proactive measures against the dreaded virus.
