Nigerians were elated when renowned American pop star, Beyoncé paid tribute to Nigeria’s Fela Kuti during her Coachella performance on Saturday.
Beyonce who has been lauded for her remarkable performance at the event, did a rendition of Fela’s 1976 classic ‘Zombie’.
There was palpable excitement when Beyonce’s instrumentalists played the jazzy instrumentation of ‘Zombie’. Even Nigerian singer, Emma Nyra couldn’t resist commenting on Beyonce’s tribute.
She wrote on Twitter:”Beyonce just made me so proud to be who I am. Unapologetically black, female and talented. Our voice matters. She even paid tribute to Fela! I will forever be a fan.”
Another Nigerian wrote on Twitter: “Who else got chills when they heard Chimamanda’s voice at the end of Beyonce’s glorious performance at Coachella? I still have goose bumps.”
Beyonce also used Chimamanda Adichie’s speech ‘We Should All Be Feminists’, which was sampled on her song ‘Flawless’, at the end of her performance. For including two Nigerians in her performance routine, Queen Bey as she is fondly called by fans, as been trending on social media.
