Renowned American rapper and business mogul, Jay-z cried when his mother, Gloria Carter, revealed to him that she is a lesbian.
Recall that in 2017, Jay-Z’s mother came out as a lesbian and the disclosure inspired him to write ‘Smile’, a track on his ‘4:44’ album.
Jay-Z noted that he had previously known that his mother was gay but they chatted about it for the first time eight months ago while he was working on the album.
The entertainer said her exposé forced out tears from him.
He made this know this in a yet to be release interview with David Letterman on his new Netflix show ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction’.
Hear him:” For her to sit in front of me and tell me ‘I think I love someone’ … I really cried. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free. I don’t even believe in crying because you’re happy. I don’t even know what that is. What is that?”
Jay-Z raps about the moment in the song Smile, on his latest album 4:44.
“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian. Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take.”
The Jay-Z episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction starts streaming on Netflix on 6 April.
