Rising pop star, Ycee who clinched the Headies Rookie of the year has revealed that Fela would have still been fighting for the downtrodden, If he were still alive.
Ycee made this known in an exclusive interview with TheNewsGuru.
According to him:” Fela was not just a musician but a public figure. He left a legacy and was a freedom fighter. When he was alive he tackled the government in a way that not too many musicians of his time and of his generation have not been able to do. The spirit of Fela is inspirational as a result of the legacy he has created with his life and his music. That is why Felabration is a week-long event. It shows that after his death, Fela is a major pioneer in Africa”.
Speaking on the influence of Afrobeat in contemporary Nigerian music, the crooner said:”By default any music that comes from Africa especially in Nigeria, has elements of Afrobeat in it. It is something Nigerian artistes dabbles into at some point in their musical journey”.
On whether Fela would still have been a freedom fighter If he was still alive, he said: ”The situation of the country goes beyond one person, Fela would have still been fighting If he were alive but it’s up to the rest of the country to make Nigeria a better place”.
