Do Nigerians celebrate their own? This question was posed to this reporter at the recently held Majek Fashek’s 30 years on stage concert organized to honour the exploits of Reggae music legend, Majekodunmi Fasheke a.k.a Majek Fashek.
The concert held on the 10th of September 2017 at Oriental Hotel Victoria Island, Lagos didn’t live up to its hype. Besides the drab performances, humour and groovy music, the show was marred by low turnout by Nigerian entertainers.
Maybe we have forgotten too soon that the new wave of reggae and dancehall music currently trending in the Nigerian music industry was made commercial by reggae music veterans like Majek Fashek.
One would have expected a large turnout of Nigerian entertainers, like 2face Idibia, Alibaba, Raskimono, Burna Boy, Patoranking and so on, but we were all disappointed that only the not so popular entertainers and DJ Jimmy Jatt, Sound Sultan, Kenny Blaq, Ade Bantu, Ushbebe, Akpororo, Maleke and others were present at the epoch-making event
Speaking on the need to celebrate Nigerian music legends, comedian Kenny Blaq said: “ We need to celebrate people like Majek when they are alive , not when they are dead and everyone will start writing RIP”.
Nigerian renowned DJ, Jimmy Jatt also spoke about Majek Fashek’s contribution to the Nigerian music industry saying:”Majek Fashek is no doubt a legend and his music will last for a long time”
For I Go Save, Majek Fashek is an artiste he is proud of. According to him: “Majek Fashek is a born talent. I can still remember when he sang Send down the rain at Ogbe Stadium and it started raining. That is spiritual. He is a living legend and we are proud of him”
TheNewsGuru noticed that only Sound Sultan and Ade Bantu were the only mainstream musicians who performed at the concert.
Mounting the stage in a black shirt with H B A on it, the reggae musician looked well fed and robust compared to when he was a shadow of himself years back. He performed songs like No more sorrow, Send down the rain , Holy spirit and others which thrilled the audience, making them ask for more of the crooner’s evergreen songs.
