From small beginnings come great things. This statement encapsulates the story of rising actress, BimboAdemoye
After receiving an extended round of applause from a 600-people strong audience as a Primary Five student at a school play, 7-year-old Bimbo Ademoye knew her destiny lay in front of a camera.
In her words:” I decided acting is going to be a career since I was seven actually. But I saw my first action in 2014 in a short film, ‘Where Talent Lies’ and that bagged me the award for the Best Actress at the Africa International Film Festival”
Born on February 4, 1991 to Mr. and Mrs. Adekunle Ademoye, one of two children. Her parents separated when she was two, so she grew up with her father acting as a single parent – this would later prove instrumental to her success
According to her: ” My dad fully supported me. He even took me to my first audition. I mean, my dad raised me alone as he was a single father; so, it was the only opinion that mattered and he was in full support”.
Bimbo who has been nominated for this year’s Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Award(AMVCA) in the ‘Best actress in a comedy movie category, has starred in movies like ‘One long day’ ‘In our trap’, ‘The real side chics’, ‘All shades of wrong’ and others.
Sharing her tale of small beginnings, Ademoye said:” Yes. I worked two jobs at a time. I had always wanted to be independent since I was a child. So when I clocked 22, I told my dad that I didn’t want him to give me money anymore. I told him to just set me up and let me do my thing. Being a father and seeing me as his little girl, he asked if he had offended me. I assured him that I simply wanted to be a woman, and he agreed.
“ So he set me up and I started with my hair business. But then, it was a lot for me, and I felt like I had arrived, and I spent the money foolishly. I couldn’t go back to him and tell him that I didn’t have returns for the money he gave me, so I had to get myself a job. I worked as a presenter; I worked as a marketer… I have done almost every job you can think of. Okay, maybe not everything, but I even worked as a front desk officer. Things finally kicked off in 2015 when I met Uduak and God has been faithful”.
The Covenant University graduate noted that growing up in Ebute Metta expanded her acting range
“I grew up in the heart of Ebute Metta so any role you see me will be the character of someone that I grew up with. The character I played in ‘ Looking for Baami’ is a reflection of the way thugs in Ebute Metta behave. The mannerism of the character I played in ‘Backup wife’ was picked from my hairdresser. She talks in a certain way. She has this ‘R’ factor when she talks and I decided to infuse it.”
Many believe Ademoye has had a fast rise in Nollywood, but she disagrees.
“I wouldn’t really say I have risen or say it’s a fast rise. I am the only one who knows my journey. God has helped me so far. We have people who have done a lot of movies and they still haven’t got to where I am.
“I am not trying to make fun of anybody, I am just being grateful to God. My special thanks go to Uduak Isong and Biodun Stephen for always pushing me. Sometimes it feels like I can’t play some roles. I didn’t know I would be able to play my role in ‘Baami’. Biodun Stephen persuaded me to give it my best.”
