The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of a church accountant for stealing money to the tune of N15.5 million, generated by offerings, donations and tithe from church members.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ibrahim Aku, the account to Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), also known as Church of the Brethren in Nigeria (CBN) was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Monday.
Aku, who was charged with six counts bordering on forgery and obtaining money by false pretence, was sentenced by Justice Nathan Musa of the Adamawa State High Court after the church proved its case beyond reasonable and unreasonable doubt.
He was investigated and prosecuted following a petition by the church through Rev. (Dr). Daniel Mbaya, Secretary General of the Church alleging that Aku defrauded the church of N15.5million between 2016 and 2018.
Investigations by the EFCC revealed that the money was generated by the church members by offerings, donations and tithe.
In a related development, the Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners Chapel had dismissed some officials for allegedly stealing from the church’s treasury.
The Presiding Bishop of the church, David Oyedepo made the disclosure recently at an empowerment summit organised for the church’s ordained workers.
It is yet to be known if the church handed the officials over to the EFCC for investigation.
