Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state at the weekend unveiled the Urhobo Language Curriculum for basic and secondary schools in the state.
Governor Okowa unveiled the curriculum at the 86th Urhobo Progress Union’s annual convention in Uvwiamuge-Agbarho.
TheNewsGuru reports the Urhobo Language Curriculum is for use by Primary Schools 1-6 and Junior Secondary Schools 1-3.
Presenting the curriculum to the Governor, the Vice Chairman of the Urhobo Studies Association based in Delta State University, Abraka, Dr Sunny Awhefeada described the patriotic effort of members of the association led by Prof Rose Aziza in ensuing the completion of the project in 10 years as worthy of emulation.
Awhefeada disclosed that a list of 100 graduates of B.A. Linguistics/Urhobo of the Department of Languages and Linguistics has been handed over to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for employment to teach the language in the selected schools.
Unveiling the curriculum which has been approved by the Delta State Government as a subject in schools, Gov Okowa described the completion of the curriculum as a very important step in ensuing the preservation of the peoples language and culture.
In the present generation when many people no longer pay attention to the development of their languages, Okowa tasked other ethnic groups to borrow a leaf from the Urhobo nation.
