The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has postponed indefinitely it’s congress earlier scheduled for today, after mounting pressure for the rescheduling over the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
According to a statement signed by Barr Kingsley Esiso, State Chairman of the party, the postponement is to avoid the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus by respecting the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO) as regards social distancing, even when there is no reported case in Delta state as of today.
Earlier, a statement by Kola Ologbondiyan, National Publicity Secretary of the party, has it that the party had adopted further safety measures in the face of the pandemic by suspending political activities.
“Sequel to the earlier decision of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to shutdown activities at our secretariats and offices across the country, the party has further resolved to suspend all activities bordering on congresses, rallies and other large gathering of members of our party across the federation, with effect from Tuesday, March 24, 2020.
“This decision has become imperative in respect to the need for continuous social distancing and other health safety measures against the spread of COVID-19 in our country.
“The PDP enjoins the Federal Government to continue to review situations as they concern the fight against the spread of COVID-19 and take measures, even if stringent, to safeguard lives,” the statement read.
Similarly, in line with measures being taken to safeguard the nation from the spread of COVID-19, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP directed a partial shutdown and skeletal activities at its National Secretariat, Abuja from Wednesday, March 25, 2020.
“The NWC also directed all PDP secretariats and offices across the country to comply with this directive accordingly. The PDP is already adopting pre-emptive health safety measures that will safeguard lives in all our offices nationwide.
“The PDP enjoins Nigerians to comply with all directives by relevant agencies of government and the World Health Organization (WHO) with regard to keeping safe from the pandemic. Our party identifies with Nigerians and the World Community at this critical time in our history,” leadership of party said.
