On Sunday December 1st , Terra Kulture, Victoria Island Lagos came alive as legendary photographer and percussionist, Sunmi Smart-Cole unveiled his new solo exhibition that captures his 43 years in photography. Themed “Sunmi’s Lens”.
Friends and allies of the revered 78-year old photojournalist who was former Photo Editor, The Guardian Newspaper gathered to honour him.
Smart-Cole has covered several prestigious and historical events and figures within and beyond the Nigerian shores, making him a documentary photographer of global repute.
At the very interactive exhibition, portraiture of popular figures like the late South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, Nelson Mandela, former American president, Bill Clinton, the Founder/Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia topped the list of works on display.
Chief Femi Olopade, a structural engineer and industrialist poured praises on Smart- Cole for staying true to his passion over the years.
In his words: ”I knew Sunmi Smart Cole many years ago when he was running on the streets of Port Harcourt in the rains with his pants on. I am very proud of him. We disagree on many issues but he is one gentleman I admire”.
In the same vein, Nigerian entrepreneur and socialite, Chief Opral Benson fondly called Iya Oge of Lagos, also recounted how Smart- Cole has been there for her family as a good friend and has over the years elevated his profession.
Former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke and his beautiful wife, Onari Duke, publisher of Vanguard newspaper, Chief Sam Amuka were among the numerous dignitaries who graced the occasion.
The exhibition will run till December 14th.
