There was pandemonium in Maitama area of Abuja on Monday as men of the Nigeria Police Force teargassed, violently disrupted Shiites protesting the continuous detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
In some of the tweet alerts monitored online by TheNewsGuru.com residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, shared endless tweets advising other residents to stay away from certain parts of city.
According to netizens, Nigerian Army and the Police were reportedly attacking people protesting the detainment of the head of Nigeria’s Islamic Movement, Ibrahim El Zakzaky.
Areas to avoid included Transcorp, NCC, Unity Fountain, Millennium Park areas of Maitama.
Photos shared on Twitter showed a police vehicle spraying water canisters, security operatives shooting tear gas, and a bullet hole through a window purportedly being from the protest.
The Shiites have been under continuous attacks by government security agencies since the clash between members of the group and the Nigerian Army in Kaduna state.
Their leader, El-Zakzaky and his wife were arrested by Nigerian authorities.
Despite court judgements for his release, El-Zakzaky is still been held by the federal government.
