Five suspected Gunrunners were killed in a shoot-out with Police Officers in the Philippine Capital on Tuesday, a Police report said.
The suspects were selling one dozen 38-calibre pistols to an undercover police officer in a private compound in the Manila suburban city of Quezon, when back-up
police officers arrived to arrest them.
They opened fire, prompting the police officers to retaliate, the police report said.
The five suspects were killed on the spot, it added.
The police officer who acted as a buyer was wounded in the shoot-out and immediately taken to hospital for treatment.
A gun ban has been in place since January in the Philippines ahead of mid-term elections in May.
The campaign period for some of the candidates in the polls began on Tuesday.
Elections in the Philippines have often been marred by violence and allegations of cheating.
For the polls on May 13, police have identified 701 of 1,634 cities and municipalities nationwide as “hotspots’’ or areas with intense political rivalry, threats from
armed groups and history of election-related violence.
