An explosion at a chemical plant in Cairo late Thursday rocked the city’s nearby international airport.
High temperatures caused fuel storage tanks at the Heliopolis Chemical Industries facility to explode, a spokesman for Egypt’s army said after the incident.
The spokesman added that the explosion was not terrorism-related.
Egypt’s minister for civil aviation said the explosion occurred outside of the airport and flights were not affected.
Photos and videos shared online showed flames and a large plume of black smoke rising from the site.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
