At least 15 people have lost their lives to the outbreak of Lassa fever in Ondo State in the last one week while about 28 people are battling for survival.
Also, a male member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), identified simply as Yinka, serving in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, has been diagnosed with the disease.
In Owo, Ondo State, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) is currently filled with patients of Lassa fever.
It was learnt that the disease has infected over 100 people who are under treatment at the Virology Department of the hospital.
A source disclosed that most of the victims were from the border communities of the state in the Northern Senatorial District like Oka-Akoko, Owo and Ose axis.
The source maintained that patients were being referred to FMC, Owo, on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that FMC, Owo which could no longer take patients of Lassa fever, patients were being referred to the Virology Centre in Akure, the state capital.
According to reports the increase in recorded cases of the disease in the state is due to lack of awareness and sensitisation on how to prevent the deadly disease.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro, said the issue was being addressed by government officials.
