Scores feared killed, houses razed in Rivers communities
Scores of Taraba and Okwali community residents in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State have been killed while several houses razed following violent attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The incident, it was gathered started around 6: 00 p.m. on Tuesday after some unidentified youths entered and raided Taraba community killing an unconfirmed number of persons and another attack on Okawli community on Wednesday morning left people dead.
A resident of Taraba community, who did not want his name in print, told newsmen that the attacks on both communities were suspected to have been perpetrated by cultists.
The resident said the assailants attacked the communities targeting their perceived enemies in both villages and shooting indiscriminately.
He added that most residents have fled from the area for fear of being hit by stray bullets.
He said, “The attackers raided Okwali community yesterday (Tuesday) evening around 6:00 p.m., shooting continuously into the air and at their targets and also burning houses.
“This morning (Wednesday), they also attacked Taaba community which is the neighboring community to Okwali, shooting and killing several persons also.
“I cannot tell the number of corpses on the ground because I couldn’t count, but they are many.” He added.
When contacted, the state police public relations officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident, adding that the command had deployed its men to the affected communities to immediately restore order.
He said, “Yes, I can confirm the incident, the police had swiftly deployed its men to the area to restore peace and order.”
