The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday during plenary addressed the issue of police brutality by which some innocent Nigerians have lost their lives.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the most recent recorded case of police brutality and extra judicial killings is the case of Ada Ifeanyi, who was killed in Ajegunle, Lagos State.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, Senator Dino Melaye cited order 42 and drew the attention of the Senate to the incessant killings.
“We are not in a war situation, we are in a democracy. I am demanding that we fast track the police reform bill so that the indiscriminate killing of Nigerians can stop,” he said.
Reacting, Senate President Bukola Saraki moved the order cited to another legislative day.
“As Senator Dino said, we have the Police Reform Report coming in tomorrow to be considered and hopefully we should be able to go through it and pass the Bill tomorrow which will address some of the issues he has raised which is of great concern.
“The rampant killings that were seen by some units of the police, we think that once we have a reform that addresses the responsibilities and the level of accountability of Police officers, we should see a better service of the Police towards our people,” Saraki said.
Meanwhile, during the Tuesday’s plenary, the Senate President read a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari on his decision to decline assent to the Nigerian Correctional Service Bill, 2019.
During the plenary, the Chemical Weapons (Prohibition) Bill, 2019; Electric Power Sector Reform Act No. 6, 2005 (Amendment) Bill, 2019, and National Board for Technical Education (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2019 were read the third time and passed.
