A fully loaded 33,000 litters petroleum tanker lost control and went up in flames claiming two lives at Sawmill/Onipepeye area of Ibadan-Lagos Express.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the tanker lost control of the vehicle about 20 metres to Ile-Marun along Iwo Road.
“after the tanker tumbled and poured its content, it flowed down the overhead bridge at Onipepeye, Old Ife Road Saw Mill side. Trust Nigerians, they started scooping the fuel into containers.
“And while they were doing this, they were not orderly. So, something sparked and fire broke out and you know, petrol is deadly. It spread to the source on the Expressway and the tanker exploded.” says a source who pleaded anonymity.
TheNewsGuru, TNG gathered that firefighters and other good-spirited passers-by attempted to curb the spread but several vehicles were burnt including many of those scooping the fuel and others who were trapped.
