Members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday threw their weight behind the clarion call for the immediate reconvening of the national Assembly to discuss the incessant killings of Nigerians resident in South Africa.
This is just as the speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has cut his one-week long official trip to Tanzania.
TNG’s probe into the matter revealed that the verdict of the lawmakers was unanimous that lawmakers should jettison their holiday to deliberate on the ongoing slaughter of innocent Nigerians in South Africa.
Hon Sergius Ogun in his reaction said that reconvention of the House is now mandatory as the issue is fast becoming horrible.
He explained that”I am very much in support. In any case we need to fix our country, if there’s employment and business opportunities here why will Nigerians go elsewhere?
“Today it’s SA tomorrow it will be Ghana “he added.
Also speaking in the same, Hon Robinson Uwak said:
“The brazen and shameful killing of Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa can no longer be tolerated.
“The primary responsibility of all arms of government as prescribed by the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria is the security and welfare of its people.
“I therefore would firstly call on the executive arm of government to take firm actions to prevent further killings of Nigerians and other Nationals in South Africa.
“I insist that there be consequences for the killings of Nigerians anywhere in the world and in this case South Africa.
“The parliament must reconvene to deliberate on this issue which in my opinion is a matter of urgent national importance.
Hon Solomon Maren, PDP, Plateau also supported the move as it will go a long way in checkmating the killings of innocent Nigerians in SA.
Earlier, the former Chairman, House committee on Public Accounts, Hon Ogundu Kingsley Ogundu, Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers had called on NASS leadership to immediately reconvene to quickly address the matter before it gets out of control.
The Federal Government to this effect has summoned the High Commissioner to South Africa in Nigeria to a meeting on Tuesday.
