From campaign to presidency, Donald Trump hasn’t been able to escape lashing from traditional to new media; but, will President Trump ever be able to avoid controversy? Will media organizations ever be fair with him?
Recently, the media, especially the social media was awash with the comments of Trump when he hosted the children of White House reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, where he passed out candy and complimented their costumes.
The video of it on the New York Times (NYT) Facebook page has since garnered more than 1.6 million views, over 6.3k comments and more than 3 thousand shares.
The comments on the video are short of respect for the number one president in the world.
“This was just awkward and sad to watch. He really has no idea how to act like a normal human. When he gets uncomfortable or doesn’t know what to say, he falls back on insults and shallowness. I almost feel bad for him,” Kendra Kaspar commented on the video on Facebook for instance.
Matt Flegenheimer’s report of the event on the NYT, he entitled “Trump Declares Journalists’ Children Cute, but He’s Still Wary of Their Parents,” stated: “But one throughline was clear: Mr. Trump regretted to inform his new friends that their parents, while surely nice enough at home, were not to be trusted”.
But what is with the video? Did Trump actually say anything wrong? Is the media being fair to him?
First, let’s watch the video and then we will together analyze his key statements in the light of some linguistic parameters to see if Trump actually said anything wrong.
As you watch through the video, you will find these subtitles very useful:
“That’s beautiful; these are beautiful, wonderful children. Ughhh. You going to grow up to be like your parents?
“Mmm, don’t answer. That can only get me in trouble, that question. No. You have wonderful parents, right?
“So, how does the press treat you? I’ll bet you get treated better by the press than anybody in the world, right? Huh? I think so.
“Well, congratulations folks! You did a good job. You did a good job. Here (pointing out to the kids), you did a good job. I wouldn’t say you did very well here (pointing to his chest/heart). But really, beautiful children,” Trump said in the video.
Trump Greets Children in White House for Halloween

It is acceptable for people to want their offspring better than them. Who doesn’t want their kids better than them?
Trump asked the kids “You going to grow up to be like your parents?” and certainly no parents want their kids to be like them; they want them better. So, Trump question here can be adjudged felicitous, given Paul Grice’s conversational implicature.
According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, “Implicature” denotes either (i) the act of meaning or implying one thing by saying something else, or (ii) the object of that act. Implicatures can be part of sentence meaning or dependent on conversational context, and can be conventional (in different senses) or unconventional”.
Implicature has been invoked for a variety of purposes, from defending controversial semantic claims in philosophy to explaining lexical gaps in linguistics. Grice, who coined the term “implicature,” and classified the phenomenon, developed an influential theory to explain and predict conversational implicatures, and describe how they arise and are understood. The Cooperative Principle and associated maxims play a central role.
More also, according to the Summer Institute of Linguistics’ (SIL) Glossary of Linguistic Terms, the cooperative principle as a principle of conversation proposed by Grice 1975, state that participants expect that each will make a “conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange”.
The cooperative principle, along with the conversational maxims, partly accounts for conversational implicatures. Participants assume that a speaker is being cooperative, and thus they make conversational implicatures about what is said.
Trump’s further statement thereafter: “Mmm, don’t answer. That can only get me in trouble, that question,” is felicitous as well as the kids would have probably answered they want to be like their parents, which won’t stand as the wish of any parent.
Trump has so far respected the maxims of quantity and quality, but the next maxim he could be guilty of is the maxim of relation or relevance. Richard Pancoast well captured that fact, but he could have accorded the president some more respects.
“This is the same mindset that got him in trouble over the botched condolence call. He really doesn’t understand the concept of context or appropriateness. For Trump, words are just words. A meeting with kids is no different than a press gaggle. A call to a widow is no different than calling the Super Bowl winners. He’s socially disabled,” he said.
Why address press issues with kids, when the issue at hand is Halloween. Does Trump actually need to address media issues with kids, and at Halloween? It showed how worked up he is, with the press.
Did Trump quite well respect the maxim of manner, which states that a speaker is assumed to make a contribution that is clear, unambiguous, brief, and orderly?
Well, yes! No structural ambiguity, no lexical ambiguity; aside from the maxim of relevance he failed to obey, he should have been well understood, if the media did not intentionally want to sensationalize the whole show.
Since the metric of measurement on the Internet is content for Google and traffic for Alexa, sensationalism has taken over the very essence of news reporting. And, governments are worn out for fake news; indication Trump is all worked up, by the press, except he intends to remain controversial for all of eternity to come.
Trump has, without remorse whatsoever, referred to CNN as Fake News Network (FNN), but will these antagonisms between Trump and the media ever see an end?
From the onset, Trump hasn’t been my favourite; Hillary Clinton was and still is. But, if you refer to a man who won the US elections as broken, it means a better half of Americans is broken, because that better half, as it stands, voted him into power!
Media organizations must learn to see Donald Trump as the President of the United States of America he is in a whole new light. They’ve got to stop addressing the person of Trump and start addressing the issues of America, which he, whether Americans accept it or not, stands for; if not, the battle between Trump and the media will be a long one.
