Outrage over Ajimobi’s expensive Technical University fees

There was outrage on Monday over the fee structure of the newly founded Technical University (Tech-U) in Oyo State.

A comprehensive breakdown of the fee structure obtained by shows that newly admitted students are to pay a total of Nine Hundred and Eighty-Three Thousand, Five Hundred Naira (₦983,500.00). While some of the items making up the overall amount are sessional, others are paid once.

A concerned citizen who expressed her disgust at the outrageous fee posted her reaction on social media. She said: “Almost a million naira per session I wonder who can afford the above fees? A civil servant, even up to the post of a Director cannot send his child to the State Technical University putting into consideration his salary, A teacher cannot, a clergy cannot, an average market trader cannot, A lecturer is not likely to.A driver cannot……Please which category of people can afford to send a child to this State University? Some private Universities are not even as expensive.You can be brilliant but that that does not guarantee you a good education in this our country.Where is the hope for the masses?”

It is on record that Tech-U, an initiative of the Ajimobi led administration in Oyo State, is the first technical university in Nigeria and by extension West Africa. The university is taking off with two faculties – Faculty Technology and Engineering and Faculty of Natural Sciences. reports that the university has since admitted the first set of students into its various accredited academic programmes. They were reportedly admitted mainly on merit.
