…says Buhari should get better training equipment for kids
…as team Nigeria garners eight medals
An eight-year-old Nigerian girl, Stepanie Ogechukwu Onusuka won a gold medal in gymnastics in the just concluded African Gymnastics Championship in South Africa.
Onusuika who was received at the airport by her parents Mr Mekoyo Onusuika and Mrs Amaka Onusuika and several well wishers including Hon Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma on Sunday were all proud of little Stepanie.
The gold medalist alongside two other contestants arrived Nigeria aboard the Ethiopian airline running into the waiting arms of her parents at about 1.15pm.
She told journalists at the Nnamdi International arrival hall that she will be glad if the President Muhammadu Buhari can ‘provide enough better equipment for children to enable them excel in future African championships.
Her fellow contestant, Kachi Umeh who is also 8 years old spoke in the same vein making a special appeal l to President Buhari to encourage children to participate in gymnastics and grow into the Olympics level.
Kachi won a silver medal in her category.
But little Eliot Asuquo who was visibly angry because his level of the competition was not fielded simply said:
‘I am not happy that my level was not fielded but next time I will effectively participate.
Coach of the tram, Anthony Asuquo while answering questions said’we went with 16 contestants and won 8 medals in various categories.
“We won 2 gold medals, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals which was a remarkable feat for the youngsters.
“I want to make a special appeal to our president to assist these children because their parents sponsored them to the competition.
” I want to specifically thank their parents and hope the Federal Government will support us in other competitions.
Earler, former chairman House of Reps committee on Nigeria/USA Relations, Hon EJ Agbonayinma had equally made an appeal to the FG to pay more attention to gymnastics and massively support the game.
Also, parents of the golden girl, Stepanie were full of praises for their daughter who they explained started developing herself through YouTube at the age of 3.
Mekoyo the father said”we noticed when she was just two how she twists her body without stress then later we saw the passion she displayed for gymnastics via YouTube we had to encourage her.
Amaka her mother also spoke in the same vein praising Stepanie who initially developed her skills alone before joining TIG the body that eventually trained her.
She added that”I was really impressed because Stepanie started training barely a year ago.
