Manchester City have dismissed reports of its bid to sign Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
The Argentinean has been linked with the Premier League champions several times since ex-Barca head coach Pep Guardiola joined the Citizens in 2016.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo quoted City chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak as saying he once made a lucrative offer for Messi.
Concise News learned that he offered more than £1 million ($1.3 million) per week.
“We asked Guardiola to talk to him, we offered him triple the salary he has at Barcelona, but he never accepted,” Mubarak was quoted as saying.
But City rubbished the report.
“We deny the veracity of these quotes,” a City spokesman said.
Messi played under Guardiola for four seasons at Barca, winning 14 titles together.
