Following the promotion of Warri Wolves Football Club (FC), premier league football returns to the city of Warri as the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) gets under way this weekend.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Warri Wolves, popularly known as Seasiders will get their 2019/ 2020 football league quest under way on Sunday 3 November 2019, with a home game at the Warri City Stadium against Akwa United of Uyo.
Speaking as the football league season begins, Warri Wolves captain, Goodluck Onamado expressed confidence that the Seasiders will be among the top three best teams by the end of the season.
Goodluck said with the crop of talents in the team, it was possible to emerge top three best teams by the end of the season.
He commended the management of Warri Wolves for securing a premier league ticket for the 2019/2020 season as well as for the recruitment of seasoned and experienced players for the new season.
Goodluck who has been with the club since 2005, had played for FC Ifeanyi Ubah, and current league champions, Enyimba International at various times before returning to join the crop of experienced players hired for the season by the Warri based team.
Speaking about his expectations for the 2019/2020 season, the versatile defender said with the current recruitment pattern employed by the club, where seasoned and experienced league players have been drafted to blend with the young stars that got the promotion ticket for the team, fans and supporters of the club will not be disappointed this season.
“I am so happy to see that premier league games have now returned to Warri. Before now, most football fans after Wolves got relegated years back will sit at home glued to their television set, but now, they will be excited to come watch live matches at the stadium.
“I know that with the experienced players in our team, and with the unflinching support from our fans, this season will be interesting and fulfilling.
“I believe Wolves will start on a winning note and work hard to maintain their form to be among the top three best teams by the end of the season.
“We want the management to create an enabling environment and the needed support, and our fans should always come out en mass at our games to cheer the team to victory,” the captain said.
TNG reports the present management of Warri Wolves led by Etu Moses had recruited players who had previously played for Wolves and others, who the management believes, with their wealth of experience in the NPFL, will help the club actualize their ambitions this season.
Such players include, Efe Yarhere, Michael Egeta, Abu Azeez, Julius Ubido and a host of others.
Speaking further and reacting to comments from a cross section of fans, who questioned his playing time and age, Goodluck said he has a lot to offer, regardless of his age, which he said was mere numbers.
“I will play until I am ready to retire, which is not soon, and when I do retire, plans are already on the way for me to join Wolves coaching crew,” he said.
Meanwhile, Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa had earlier congratulated the players and management of Warri Wolves following their promotion to the NPFL.
Recall the Seasiders returned to the NPFL after four years in relegation after defeating Dynamite Force of Benin City in a game that went into extra time, after a goalless draw in regulation time.
Governor Okowa in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Aniagwu had said the promotion of Warri Wolves to the NPFL is a well deserved effort and a proof of the State Government’s commitment to sports development.
While also congratulating the Chairman and members of the Delta State Sports Commission, the Governor noted that the promotion no doubt is an encouragement to do more for sports development in the state.
He charged the two Delta based football clubs in the NPFL, Warri Wolves and Delta Force, to strive harder and double their efforts towards winning the NPFL and securing continental tickets in the 2019/2020 season.
