GITEX 2019 : NITDA secures partnership with European Data Protection office
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)
partnered with the European Data Protection Office (EDPO) to enable Nigerian businesses to comply with the General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The partnership was concluded at the ongoing 39th Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Director General of NITDA, Mr Kashifu Inuwa, who was represented by Dr Vincent Ayatunji, the Director, e-Governance and Regulation,
said that “the partnership is a step in the right direction toward enabling the country’s compliance with data protection.”
Inuwa recalled that the agency issued the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) in January 2019 with the objective of protecting
personal data, improving ease of doing business in the country and to create jobs for over 300,000.
He said “NITDA has been designated as the contact agency for Nigerian entities that seek to comply with the GDPR.
“EDPO would facilitate Nigeria’s aspiration to become the first African country to meet the European Union’s GDPR adequacy requirement,
which would open Nigerian businesses to opportunities in the European market.
“NITDA will through its licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisations,assist Nigerian entities to be fully compliant with
the GDPR to ensure global competitiveness and business continuity,”he said.
Dr Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communications, on behalf of the Federal Government, reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to partner
with EDPO to actualise the country’s objective of improving ease of doing business and to make Nigerian companies to have global relevance.
Pantami said it would be in line with President Muhammandu Buhari’s economic diversification agenda.
GITEX is a global technology exhibition that gathers over 200,000 IT interests and more than 145 countries to network on advancing technology.
