Quite recently, a video went viral on social media of a Nigerian who was stuck in a gridlock on Lagos-Benin Expressway for several hours on a Sunday, and called a helicopter to pick him up from Ore.
The unnamed individual was subsequently airlifted out of a soul-cringing stressful environment owing to a bumper-to-bumper traffic snarl that lasted for more than two hours on the busy expressway.
However, the chopper company later came out to say that the flight was carried out in collaboration with flying doctors to evacuate the person who needed emergency medical services.
That is not the main gist here now as Uber, popular ride-hailing company offering services that include peer-to-peer ridesharing, ride service hailing, food delivery, and a micromobility system with electric bikes and scooters, now offers a helicopter service.
Weaving through Manhattan’s busy traffic can be a pain — especially for travelers rushing to catch a flight; but now, passengers starved for time now have another option.
Uber Copter, Uber’s first aviation technology product, was rolled out on October 7, 2019 to zip passengers from lower Manhattan to John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport with an eight-minute chopper ride; but the service is not available elsewhere yet.
However, with the successful trial of the service in Manhattan, Uber might want to introduce the service in Nigeria, where billionaires like the one involved in the Ore incident can conveniently foot the bill.
A trip from downtown Manhattan to JFK airport, a distance of 29.8km of 1hr 14mins by road, takes just 8mins with Under Copter and costs $200US, approximately N73,000.00, and it involves two trips of ground transportation.
Here’s what a typical trip looks like:
- Book your Uber Copter trip with the Uber app — you’ll see Copter as an option if your journey starts within the designated zone. This can be done up to five days in advance, or just 30 minutes before your flight.
- An Uber car will pick you up from your location and bring you to the Downtown Manhattan Heliport.
- At the heliport, you’ll check in and watch a 90-second safety video before boarding. “This process is intended to take as little time as possible as Uber Copter is meant to provide time savings for people to get between Lower Manhattan and JFK, and vice versa,” an Uber spokesperson told CNBC in an email.
- Embark on your eight-minute chopper ride to JFK airport, where you’ll land at a helipad near Terminal 8.
- There, an Uber car will take you to your departure terminal.
Passengers can bring along one carry-on suitcase weighing 40 pounds (18 kilograms) tops, and one personal item.
