Andela, software developer training and outsourcing company, launched in Nigeria 5 years ago, has said it would be providing holistic support programs for junior engineers affected by the shift in focus announced by the firm on Tuesday.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Jeremy Johnson, CEO and Co-Founder of Andela in a statement said the firm was shifting approach to be focused on senior engineering talent, with junior talent layered in on top of it.
Andela let go of approximately 250 Andelans in Nigeria and Uganda, with an additional 170 potentially impacted in Kenya, who the company believed they will not be able to find meaningful work for over the next year.
In letting go the junior engineers, Andela’s Vice President of Global Operations, Seni Sulyman said the holistic support programs would include financial and emotional resources and an ongoing access to learning programs and job placement services.
“Moving forward, we’ll focus on senior talent, with junior talent layered in on top of it. This means letting go of about 250 Andelans in Nigeria and Uganda, and 170 potentially impacted in Kenya. It also means hiring up to 700 experienced engineers by the end of 2020.
“The well-being of our employees, both past and present, is our immediate priority. We are providing holistic support programs for those who are affected by this shift, including ongoing access to learning programs and job placement services.
“We have also committed a range of financial and emotional resources to former employees, and those who are leaving will continue to have access to the strongest engineering network on the African continent. Once an Andelan, always an Andelan.
“We’ve also partnered with innovation hubs in each country (CcHUB, Innovation Village) to identify 60 companies who are looking for developers in their local ecosystem. These hubs will offer impacted engineers the opportunity to use their co-working spaces free for 3 months,” Seni stated.
Meanwhile, following the announcement by Andela, CcHUB announced introducing dedicated spaces to offer junior developers opportunities to connect to jobs and continuous professional development, but never mentioned the 400 junior engineers impacted by the Andela’s shift.
CcHUB announced a Talent Lounge that will feature free access to it’s co-working spaces, job readiness support, membership to developer communities, Developer Certification Training, interviews and one on one with HR and Engineering Teams of over 60 companies from across Lagos, Nairobi and Kampala.
“Over the coming weeks, we will be working with companies across Africa to further provide placement opportunities for engineering talent.
“Additional key offerings in the lounge will include access to the Developer Circle Membership, Crush Your Code Interview Workshop by Facebook and Facebook Certified Ads Product Developer,” CcHUB stated.
